Nottingham City Centre

Garry Poyser swore under his breath as he walked out of the Black Aces Casino, in the Hockley district of Nottingham.

He had endured another torturous night of loss in the casino.

Over a month had passed since Rebecca left to visit her sick mother in Norwich. On that day, she had given him five hundred pounds to spend on household bills, food and drink.

Then, the second week on his own in the flat at Carrington, he had felt so bored that he dressed smartly and went into the city centre for a few beers. He had ended the night in the Black Aces, and everything had been perfect. That first night he had won big on the roulette wheel, almost doubling the two hundred pounds he’d taken out with him.

He cut a desolate figure as he trudged through the city now. He walked with his head down and his hands in his pockets, reflecting on how it would have been better to have lost all his money on that first night.

After that first big win, he became a regular visitor to the casino. As the nights went by, he steadily lost all the money Rebecca had left for him. The losing streak continued as he gambled on in a vain attempt to recoup his losses.

Until tonight. As he lost on yet another spin of the roulette wheel, the casino security staff had pulled him roughly to one side and told him his credit had been withdrawn. He would be barred from the premises until his debt of three thousand pounds was cleared in full.

He had protested at first, demanding they allow him the opportunity to win his money back. But then, surrounded by five burly security men, he had decided against taking his protests further.

It had been impressed on him that unless he paid his debt in full, he would experience a world of pain. He had been left in no doubt that the security guards, and their supervisor, meant business and were no strangers to administering violence.

He had stormed out of the casino, vowing never to return. They could whistle for their money.

As he walked, the cold air cleared the alcohol and cigar smoke from his brain, and he realised that, on his first visit to the casino, he had signed up to be a member. No membership meant no play at the tables. He now recalled how he had given the casino staff the name Jamie Hart and Rebecca’s address.

He swore under his breath. He knew he couldn’t ignore the debt. At some stage, those meatheads would visit Rebecca’s flat to demand their money.

As he walked through the theatre district, he saw a queue of people waiting impatiently to be allowed access to a nightclub. People at the back of the queue were pushing, causing pressure at the front. He could see a single bouncer at the head of the queue, trying to control things.

There was a bright green neon light above the door, intermittently flashing the name Manhattan Junction.
